CancerCare Support Groups Connect Patients Across the U.S.
Darcy Cardarelli, a longtime resident of Haverhill, Massachusetts, started her career in computer programming as a manager at John Hancock. She went on to serve as president of the software company SOTAS International for 16 years. Today, Darcy Cardarelli is heavily involved in cancer awareness and support groups. Her website, www.alwayshaveheart.com, to go live by the end of 2018, will offer hope and community by connecting families facing cancer.
The national organization CancerCare is a support-services provider that delivers counseling, education, and financial support programs to individuals affected by cancer. CancerCare’s services are available to residents in all 50 states. In 2017, over 195,000 people accessed its services.
CancerCare offers a 15-week web-based counselling and support program. The online forum is facilitated by a social worker and is accessible 24 hours a day. There are over 15 different support groups categorized by specific cancer type. There are also several groups designed for caregivers and people who have lost loved ones to cancer.
Patients can also access support over the phone. CancerCare hosts three telephone-based support programs that enable patients to connect during weekly sessions.
